Self Development Through Shaolin Martial Arts

World Championships Italy 11th - 14th May 2006

For the third year running Nam Yang represented the UK at the World Champioships in Perugia, Italy.

This year we had nine athletes competing for world titles of which, Troy Kenchington and Ethan Simmonds both hoping to retain titles they won last year.

On Friday after the opening ceremony the routines and weapons competition was on, starting with Iain Armstrong competing in the Masters Trophy followed by Stephen Keen, Troy Kenchington, Ethan Simmonds and David Fidgett all competing in freehand and weapon categories.

Saturday was fighting day with Nick Evagorou fighting in the professional Sanda category, Troy and Ethan did an amazing job, Troy being the first British fighter to beat a Russian and Ethan winning both in his weight category and the one above.

Vesim Demeni also did well winning his semi final to obtain Silver in the light contact competition, John Garrod and Andy Willis had good fights too.

Chief Instructor Iain Armstrong was happy with the results and is anticipating our return next year.

Troy: 'When I started martial arts I was a little fat 9 year old. I never even dreamed I would be world full contact kickboxing champion two years running'.

Ethan: 'I hope to be an Olympic Champion in the future'

Iain: 'we have built one of the strongest teams in Western Europe but we are certainly not going to rest. In future we will field bigger teams and get more medals. Our sport keeps young people fit and healthy, teaches them respect and keeps them off the streets and we are very grateful to the Borough Council for their support of our project. We expect our current success to attract more and more local people into our sport. www.namyang.co.uk
