Chinese Southern Shaolin Lion Dance & Dragon Dancing

  • Dragon Dance

The Lion is a symbol of good luck and is therefore often seen at Chinese New Year, celebrations and the opening of new businesses.

Nam Yang Martial Arts Association Lion and Dragon Dancers
Nam Yang Martial Arts Association Lion and Dragon Dancers out in force! We celebrated Chinese New Year 2005 by bringing out two Dragons and six Lions to dance in London. The size of our squad makes us one of the larger Lion and Dragon Dance troupe in Europe.

This flambouyant display involves two people in a 'lion' performing a long series of strenuous steps to the beat of drum, cymbals and gong. The art requires and promotes great skill and dexterity and is of great benefit to Kung Fu training.

The Nam Yang Martial Arts Association enjoys the membership of the Singaporian national champion. The British group has grown strong in recent years and we have been making many public performances. We have shared a float with Chris Eubanks in Croydon, and celebrated Chinese New Year in Leicester Square and Chinatown. We make demonstrations regularly around the country and the team have even been flown out to Bahrain to perform. Members of the Lion Dance troupe enjoy plenty of opportunities for travel as a performer.

In competition we recently placed fourth in the World Traditional Martial Arts Championship, which took place in Germany, against strong global opposition. We also won four silver medals for both Kung Fu forms and chinese kickboxing.

Nam Yang Martial Arts Association is also one of the few who teach Dragon Dance. This is a much larger dance and involves many more dancers.
